You’re Doing Everything Wrong
According to everybody
You aren’t working the job you dreamed you’d be working when you were five years old: Wrong.
On your days off, your friends and family don’t understand the things you do: Wrong. Why can’t you spend more time doing things that other people think are meaningful?
You mean to tell me you enjoy sitting on your couch and watching obscure YouTube videos? So wrong.
You never stand up for yourself! You’ll never get anywhere in life. Why can’t you be more like Doug? Doug is never scared to talk to the manager to get a discount. Wrong, wrong, wrong!
If you’re used to hearing things like this (whether it be from your inner monologue or other people), take a deep breath, and repeat after me:
“Fuck what everybody else thinks! Five-year-old me was an idiot! And lastly, FUCK DOUG! I’m not going to get in an altercation because I think I should take priority over everyone else in the restaurant.”
I’ve been struggling with where I’m at in life lately, and it helps to remind myself that I’m the only person I need to please. The things I do in my free time don’t need to be approved by anybody. I’m not looking to impress anybody with any of my actions. I’m a simple man, and I have simple desires.
For example: On any given day I just want to be in a good place mentally. Not even great, just good. I want to smile more than I frown, and have a healthy amount of positive thoughts. I want to realize intrusive thoughts for what they are, and not spend time compounding scenarios around them, they aren’t real, and don’t represent reality in any sort of way.
Conclusion
We are the only people who have any control over our pursuits of happiness. If we want things in our lives to change, we have to be that catalyst for change because just as we spend 90% of our time looking out for ourselves, so do others look out for themselves. We can’t expect to be carried to someplace of respect, we have to put in motion the things that are going to garner that respect, no matter what aspect of your life you apply it to.
I wrote this for myself, but if you’re like me, you need to hear these things every now and then. Don’t let other people belittle the things you take pride or pleasure in doing. You’re great, and IDGAF who you are or what you do.
